On Tuesday, March 7, 2023 Commissioners signed a Pre-Referendum Proposal with HMN Architects to provide services to prepare for a new Grant County Justice Center.
Grant County Commissioners have been researching and discussing the possibility of remodeling the present jail facility or building new on another site. After several years of discussion and research the project is taking off. Architects will start immediately with a facility assessment and report probable cost estimates for both options. The reports should be in commissioner hands by early June.
Commissioners feel using a sales tax to generate the funds to feed a bond could be possible and Commissioner Marty Long will introduce testimony to support HB 2421. (House Bill 2421 an act concerning sales and compensation use tax; relating to city and countywide retailer's sales tax; providing countywide retailer's sales tax authority for Grant County.) This bill would authorize Grant County to submit the question of imposing a countywide retailer's sales tax and pledging the revenue received for the purpose of financing the construction or remodel of a jail facility, to the electors of Grant County at an election to be determined at a later date. The tax would sunset immediately after all cost incurred in the financing of jail facility have been paid. If the bill passes the house it will move to the senate for consideration.
If you have questions or concerns County Commissioners welcome any citizen of Grant County to come to a regular meeting at 10:00 am for the public forum of their meeting.
